Robert was born in 1948.  Robert's father was Alan Gardiner Toovey and his mother was Margaret Evelyn Brown.  His paternal grandparents are Lomas George (Lowrie) Toovey and Emily Charlotte Gardiner; his maternal grandparents were Lindsay Murdock Graham Snushall and Margaret Ellen (Nell) McGlenchy.  He has three brothers and five sisters, named David, Wayne, Shane, Lorraine, Alexie, Karin, Linda and Raelene.  He is the third oldest of the nine children.
