David was born in April 1957.  David's father was Alan Gardiner Toovey and his mother was Margaret Evelyn Brown.  His paternal grandparents are Lomas George (Lowrie) Toovey and Emily Charlotte Gardiner; his maternal grandparents were Lindsay Murdock Graham Snushall and Margaret Ellen (Nell) McGlenchy.  He has three brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Wayne, Shane, Lorraine, Alexie, Karin, Linda and Raelene.  He is the sixth oldest of the nine children.
