Walter was born in 1887.  Walter's father was Robert Joseph William Stynes and his mother was Mary Anne Somers.  His paternal grandparents were William John Stynes and Mary Anne McDonald.  He had five brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Harold, Harry, Reginald, Charles, Alice and Lilian.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
