Leonard was born in May 1916.  Leonard's father was Herbert Benjamin (Bert) Pearce and his mother was Emily Frances Elizabeth Wright.  His paternal grandparents were Francis James (Jim) Pearce and Mary Matilda Todd; his maternal grandparents were Charles Henry Wright and Selina Mills.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named Francis, Frederick, Olga and Edna.  He is the second oldest of the five children.
