May was born in 1885.  May's father is Neil McQueen and her mother was Mary McDonald.  Her maternal grandparents were Edward McDonald and Maria (Mary) Maher.  She has four brothers and a sister, named Percy, Archie, Charles, Donald and Florence.  She is the second oldest of the six children.
