John was born on December 22nd, 1826.  John's father was Edward McDonald and his mother was Catherine Potaskie II.  His paternal grandparents are About Family Tree McDonald and McDonald Family Tree About; his maternal grandparents were John Potaskie and Catherine Sullivan.  He had six brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, Edward, Owen, Walter, Daniel, James, Mary, Anne, Catherine, Elizabeth and Brigid.  He was the third oldest of the twelve children.
