Daniel was born in 1872.  Daniel's father was Daniel McDonald and his mother was Mary Anne Hennessy.  His paternal grandparents were Edward McDonald and Catherine Potaskie II.  He had seven brothers and four sisters, named Alfred, Robert, Ernest, Henry, John, Thomas, Alexander, Agnes, Alice, Mary and Anne.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
