Sylvester was born in 1884.  Sylvester's father was William Thomas Groom and his mother was Margaret Elizabeth McDonald.  His maternal grandparents were Edward McDonald and Maria (Mary) Maher.  He had five brothers and four sisters, named Edward, Francis, Milburne, Leo, William, Stella, Sylvia, Olga and Ivy.  He is the oldest of the ten children.
