Stella was born in 1886.  Stella's father was William Thomas Groom and her mother was Margaret Elizabeth McDonald.  Her maternal grandparents were Edward McDonald and Maria (Mary) Maher.  She had six brothers and three sisters, named Sylvester, Edward, Francis, Milburne, Leo, William, Sylvia, Olga and Ivy.  She is the second oldest of the ten children.
