Thomas was born in 1851.  Thomas' father was James Gateland and his mother was Hanna (Anna/Anne) Potaskie.  His maternal grandparents were John Potaskie and Catherine Sullivan.  He had two brothers and a sister, named Joseph, James and Eliza.  He was the youngest of the four children.  He had two half-brothers named Patrick and John.  He died at the age of 2 on December 28th, 1853.
