William, known as James, was born on August 30th, 1864.  James' father was Ebenezer James Dawson and his mother was Eliza Gateland.  His paternal grandfather was William Dawson and his paternal grandmother is Anne Lydia Barrett; his maternal grandparents were James Gateland and Hanna (Anna/Anne) Potaskie.  He had three brothers and ten sisters, named Ebenezer, Harry, Basil, Grace, Minnie, Cecilia, Amy, Eva, Gertrude, Rose, Blanche, Euphemia and Winnifred.  He was the second oldest of the fourteen children.  He died at the age of 81 on August 3rd, 1946.
